Working non-stop is not sustainable. In fact, it's practically a direct path to emotional or physical burnout, which means you're more likely to need more sick days or additional vacation time.
You’re more likely to suffer from productivity If you don’t take an early afternoon break, you’re likely to crash before the end of your workday, losing focus and motivation to keep going. And while we may think we’re getting more done, our work may not be as good if we don’t take time to rest and refuel.
It can have a negative effect on your physical health. Especially if you’re sitting at a desk staring at a screen all day, it’s imperative that you take time to get up and move around at different intervals. Even just a five-minute walk every hour, or stepping away from the screen to make a cup of tea and rest your eyes, can be very beneficial.
We know that lunch breaks and clocking out are directly linked to good health, but it’s much easier said than done. So how can we break this harmful habit?
Making your lunch break productive, fun, healthy or all of the above If you’re one of those people who can’t sit still or always needs to be doing something, it’s totally fine to fill your lunch break with something – just make sure it’s not work-related! Here are our favorite ideas.
Practice mindful eating This might sound a little strange, but it’s really simple. We’ve all eaten in front of a screen, but try to put away your laptop/TV/phone for at least three lunches a week and simply enjoy your food. Eating without other distractions will also help you feel fuller for longer and more satisfied in the end.
Chat with your colleagues Have you ever walked into a meeting and wanted to chat the entire time with your colleagues? I certainly have, and so has my boss (sorry, Katie). You can make these moments less frequent by using your lunch break to catch up. Organize Zoom lunches, go for a walk together, or simply sit away from your desks and have a chat.
Catch up with loved ones Your lunch break is the perfect opportunity to call your mum/partner/grandma etc., as you can step away from your desk and combine a chat with a nice walk. You’ll earn points, enjoy the benefits of fresh air and exercise AND you’ll probably feel more focused when you get back to work. Wins all round.
In short, make the most of your break, don't waste time cooking and you'll also save time at the end of the day by not having to go to the supermarket. Saving time and making the best use of it are the key to a better life.
